see it in the slice : leftovers yield nourishment in new forms (2023)

Various foraged clays, glaze scraps, clay trap sediment, coloured glass waste, eggshells, ash, oyster shells, broken ceramics, broken glass, muscle shells.

Exposing self-portraits in the slice; recording  a relationship to place through the amalgamation of materials.

The making process documents the act of collecting, saving for later, learning the qualities of substances once fired, mixing and experimenting, archiving materials and tests, cycling failures back into the making process, slowly acquiring an understanding of materials. Processing and cataloging everything before homogenising it all into a dense mass. In slicing the cross-section discloses the collector’s alchemy; the cowboy chemistry of waste and the abundance of the landscape underfoot.
